Hotel swimming pool accidents can occur for a number of reasons, many resulting from hotel negligence. Examples include:

  • Unreasonably slippery walking surfaces, including swimming pool deck
  • Crack, holes and other defects in the deck
  • Inadequate pool cleaning
  • Inappropriate mixture or levels of cleaning agents
  • Inadequate warnings, such as depth markers
  • Structural defect in pool
  • Sharp edges inside pool
  • Loose tiles
  • Improper pool drain system
  • Missing safety equipment
  • Lack of adequate lifeguard
  • Undertrained lifeguard
  • Lifeguard inattention
  • Overcrowded pool
  • Missing, damaged, or malfunctioning gates
  • Inadequate maintenance leading to electrical hazards
  • Attacks by other swimmers
  • Failure to call for medical assistance when needed

While the larger hotels may have full time lifeguards on duty, many smaller hotels do not. Parents should always supervise their children while in the water, even if a lifeguard is present.
